The Dalhousie Tigers are excited to announce the induction of five athletes and one team into the Dalhousie Sport Hall of Fame at the 2025 Celebration this October.
"The opportunity to celebrate and recognize some of our finest student-athletes is a true privilege鈥 says Tim Maloney, Assistant Vice-President, Athletics and Ancillary Services.聽 鈥淭his year's class of inductees have resumes that are beyond impressive and will add to the quality of our hall of fame - we are proud to call them Tigers!"
Leading the class of 2025 is track and field athlete Simon Watts. Arguably one of the most decorated individual athletes to wear the black and gold, Simon won four CIS medals during his time at Dalhousie. The 2008-09 AUS Rookie of the Year, he also brought home AUS field athlete of the year, championship athlete of the meet and athlete of the year award in addition to his all-Canadian nods.
Three-time AUS men鈥檚 volleyball most valuable player, Scott Bagnell is joining Watts in this year鈥檚 class. A five-time AUS champion with the Tigers, Bagnell earned three first team all-star nods, two all-Canadian honours and was named the Climo Award winner in 1994-95.
"This is easily the greatest individual honour I have received," says Bagnell. "My fondest memories of Dal involve varsity athletics. My teammates were truly not just my social group during my university days, but essentially family. My coaches (Al聽Scott聽and Dan Ota) have continued to stay in contact and provided me with endless expertise in coaching and player development. All a testament to the bonds formed over those five wonderful years.聽In short, the thought that Dal wants to keep a little part of me, after all the great memories it has left me with is probably the greatest feeling of all. It is such a privilege to be included with all the prior inductees."
Carla (Perry) Ellis was a cornerstone of the Tigers women鈥檚 soccer program during her time in the black and gold. A member of the first-ever Tigers team to win a CIS national title, Ellis earned several individual honours including AUS all-star awards, all-Canadian honours, and was named he AUS most valuable player in 1993.
In the short history of the Tigers women鈥檚 hockey program, Jocelyn LeBlanc stands out. The 2007-08 AUS Rookie of the Year, LeBlanc鈥檚 name is still all over the Tigers and AUS record books. A five-time all-star she holds four records for the Tigers including most points and goals in a game, most goals in a season, most career points and goals.
"It's a huge honour to be inducted into the hall of fame," says LeBlanc. "Looking through all the previous inductee's its very humbling to be considered in the same sentence as some Dalhousie athletics legends like Carolyn Savoy and Karen Moore. Being the first female hockey player inducted is also a huge honor! I would not have been able to have been considered had I not had the opportunity to play with great teammates and coaches that believed in me during those years."
Simon Farine enjoyed an illustrious four-year career at Dalhousie, helping to transform the program into a national contender and building a winning culture. A four-time AUS all-star, Farine was twice named the AUS tournament most valuable player, earned all-Canadian honours in 2011 and was named the RW Pugh Fair Play Award winner that same year.
The lone team entering the hall this year is the 2003-04 men鈥檚 hockey team. The Tigers captured a national bronze medal that season, beating the University of Alberta in the third-place game 4-1 and creating an Atlantic university sweep of the CIS medals that season. Several players earned individual honours that season including Chris Stanley being awarded the Senator Joseph A Sullivan Trophy for player of the year, and Fred Belanger and JF Perras also earned all-star nods.
