Environmental Law Students' Society
The (ELSS) is a student-run society that focuses on environmental issues as they relate to the law. We are active within the law school, the greater university, and the Halifax community in general. Guest lectures, community contributions, environmental law-oriented occasions, social events, and outings are all organized and executed by the ELSS members.
The ELSS thrives on student participation. We hold general meetings for our society in which all members are welcome to attend and actively participate in event planning and activism efforts. Our efforts aim to reach beyond the law school into the broader community.
We engage in environmental activism throughout the academic year. Events range from speaker series, letter-writing campaigns, and workshops to explore mechanisms for greater change. We participate in the yearly Climate Strike and promote opportunities to engage with provincial and federal leaders and policymakers on environmental issues. We also focus on promoting active transport and sustainable food initiatives within the law school. Finally, we support East Coast Environmental Law (ECELAW) in various projects and programs.
To facilitate student interest in environmental law and non-traditional legal careers, the ELSS hosted alternative career forums focused on jobs in policy, science, and more. Every year, a “Meet the Professors” (MTP) event is hosted by the ELSS, the Marine & Environmental Law Institute (MELAW) and the Career Development office, providing a casual environment for students interested in learning more about the professors in the Marine & Environmental Law program at the Schulich School of Law.
We look forward to the recurring and new events and activism efforts in the coming years!
