CSSD Seminar Series

The CSSD hosts a variety of public lectures, panels, and roundtable events throught the course of each academic year, featuring CSSD Fellows and visiting scholars. These events are usually free and open to the public. Information on upcoming events can be found in the Events Calendar.

Centres, Peripheries, Interstices: Towards an Eclectic Political Economy of Global Development

This two-day workshop (29-30 October 2021) brought together scholars from North America, Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean to take stock of key changes in global development thinking and practice in the context of a rapidly evolving global order. Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSRHC), it was organized around four themes: theories and methods; evolving forms of governance; agency; andÌýalternative futures.ÌýIt was also an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of two of Canada’s most prolific global development studies scholars, Timothy Shaw and Jane Parpart. Selected papers were published in two special issues of International Journal, Vol. 74, nos. 3 & 4.

Untangling the Climate Change/Migration/Security Nexus

A two-day workshop hosted by CSSD and JMEUCE, August 24-25 at Dalhousie, on the connections between climate change, security, and migration, featuring academic experts from Canada, the US, and Europe. Supported by a Targeted Engagement Grant from DND’s MINDS program. More details forthcoming.

Beyond GDP: International Experiences, Canada's Options

A two day workshop on May 23 and 24 2019 at ÐӰɵ¼º½ aimed at advancing academic, public, and policy debate on wellbeing measurement in Canada through bringing together Canadian and international academics, policymakers and government officials, non-governmental organizations, and the public. Conference sponsors included Engage Nova Scotia, The CIC: Halifax Branch, Green AnalyticsÌýand SCORAI. Edited volume featuring conference presentations published by University of Toronto Press.

Maritime Security Workshop Series

This workshop series brings together invited representatives from academia, the federal and provincial governments, the Royal Canadian Navy and international navies, and industry, as appropriate for each event. Participants share their research and experience on various aspects of maritime security policy, with particular attention to evolving maritime security challenges, procurement and naval capabilities development, and international and inter-agency cooperation.
